Standards

The IMI (information management initative) Framework sets out the approach for implementing information management in the UK, using the framework for managing information provided by the ISO 19650 series. It includes:

  • the published standards called upon to implement information management in the UK
  • the IMI Guidance Framework

Below is the current list of core standards adopted within the IMI Framework, including links to the British Standards Institution, where the standards can be accessed and purchased.

Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM).

Information management using building information modelling - Concepts and principles.

ISO 19650-1 is the first part of the ISO 19650 series on building information modelling (BIM). This part outlines the concepts and principles and provides recommendations on how to manage building information.

Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM).

Information management using building information modelling - Delivery phase of the assets.

International standard ISO 19650-2 is the second part in the ISO 19650 series on building information modelling (BIM). This part supplies information management requirements in the delivery phase of assets. The UK National Annex is part of the UK BIM framework and contains the UK-specific recommendations for information management on projects.

Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM).

Information management using building information modelling - Delivery phase of the assets.

ISO 19650specifies requirements for information management, in the form of a management process, within the context of the operational phase of assets and the exchanges of information within it, using building information modelling.

Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM).

Information management using building information modelling - Information exchange.

ISO 19650-4 supplements ISO 19650-1 to ISO 19650-3 and ISO 19650-5 by providing the explicit process and criteria for each individual information exchange. The intention is to secure the benefits arising from collaborative and interoperable building information modelling (BIM) by choosing ‘open’ schemas, data formats and conventions whilst specifying when alternatives may be appropriate.

Information management using building information modelling - Security-minded approach to information management

ISO 19650specifies the principles and requirements for security-minded information management at a stage of maturity described as building information modelling (BIM) according to the ISO 19650 series and as defined in ISO 19650-1

Information management using building information modelling - Health and safety information

This standard specifies concepts and principles for classifying, sharing and delivering health and safety information collaboratively, to secure economic, environmental and social benefits.

The principles and requirements of BS EN ISO 19650-6:2025 can be applied equally to delivery or in-use phases not using BIM.

Design, manufacture and construction for operability. Code of practice.

BS 8536 gives recommendations on design, manufacture and construction for operability in relation to an asset(s) (e.g. buildings and infrastructure for energy, telecommunication, transport and water), taking account of the expected performance of the asset in use over its planned operational life.
